Having the drinking age is at 21 changes another major factor when people think about drinking. When you are younger than 21 you drink to get drunk and because it is cool. It usually happens in a dirty basement or something that relates to the same situation. If the age was lowered to 18, people would begin to drink for different reasons. They may be able to actually enjoy the alcohol instead of abusing the alcohol. That in effect will save lives beyond drinking and driving.

So you're saying that underage people drink because it is cool that they are disobeying the law and are being rebels, right? I can understand that, but still, whether the drinking age is lowered or not, the effect of alcohol on the body is the same. Even if people start to drink just to enjoy the taste, aren't they still going to keep drinking to the point of drunkenness, and make irrational decisions? I don't see how this can save lives, unless you contend that less people would drink, which equates to less accidents.

Either way you put it, I agree with lowering the drinking age but it does in fact make me think more on what would happen if it was lowered. this topic is like the discussion of legalizing marijuana, im for it but it does need careful consideration. there are immature people that would definitely need to grow up more before actually drinking(legally). Accidents of drunk driving are going to happen regardless but wouldn't there be an increase in these accidents and other accidents? and living in chapel hill will make people more aware of the idiocy drunk kids!!

Well in this country drinking is legal to do, regardless of effects of the body. Many things are legal in this country and when abused it can lead to unhealthy effects to the body. We can look at tobacco products, or even the obesity problem tied into the expanse of fast food restaurants. Instead of picking an arbitrary number like 21 to make it legal to drink, the government should be reasonable. Unless they plan to ban smoking, McDonald's and fighting wars until people are 21, better yet ban them permanently, then alcohol should be legal for 18 year olds as well.

Drunk driving accidents is a very serious issue, but moving the alcohol age won't have that major of an effect on it. It is a known fact that people drink alcohol underage as well as overage. Technology is being developed to help improve safety in cars, but it is a serious issue. Regardless if it is 22 year olds drink legal and driving drunk illegal, or 19 year old driving and drinking illegal changing the alcohol age dosen't have much to do with it. Alcohol is easily available. Instead prevention programs and education programs need to be set up to help curve drunk driving.
