Another issue with the high drinking age is that it would appear that the government is sheltering the 18 – 20 year olds from the use of alcohol until they are older. The problem with this is that parents are supposed to tech their children about the ways of life to hopefully allow them to be able to survive with out to many problems once entering adulthood. If parents try and show their children different alcohols and perhaps help teach responsibility, they often find themselves in jail. Instead of parents being able to provide a reasonable drinking environment, illegal drinking is pushed into unsafe environments.

I agree with you- parents should be allowed to teach their children the responsibilities of alcohol. The government is showing parents that it does not trust them in this area by not lowering (or eliminating) the drinking age and by being so strict on underage drinking. If American adolescents were raised with a better understanding of how to act responsibly with alcohol, perhaps there would not be so many alcohol- related problems in today's society.

I like your point about drinking being pushed to unsafe places. In countries where the drinking age is lower it is not as big of deal and therefore they have less problems with it. I think that sometimes people drink simply because it is illegal and they think it is cool.

Both of these points are excatly right. The government in most states are stripping the parents right if not duty to try and prepare their children for the world. Otherwise when the child is finally released into the world experiencing nothing, they have a higher chance of making mistakes.

That is one of the main problems, alcohol will always be available to illegals, but it has been shown that if alcohol was going to be available at 18, many people would abstain from drinking in high school. This would allow people to drink in legitimate places instead of traveling out in the middle of the woods to crack open a beer.
